Sumbal, June 10 (KNO): A 17-year-old girl died after drowning into a power canal at Sumbal Bala in Kangan area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Wednesday evening.

Officials told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the deceased girl has been identified as Muneeza Bashir daughter of Bashir Ahmad Kasama of Sumbal Bala.

“Some passers-by saw the girl drowning in power canal and they immediately informed the police,” they said.

The officials said that soon after the incident took place, local police and SDRF team launched a rescue operation to trace the girl, however a few hours later, the body was fished out from the power canal.

A senior police officer also confirmed the death of the girl due to drowning and said the body was handed over to her family for last rites after legal formalities. He said the police have registered a case under sections 174 CrPC has been registered in this regard while further investigations has been taken up.

As per the officials, the body was taken for postmortem to trauma hospital Kangan—(KNO)
