A 16 year old Sopore girl has bagged silver medal in an international event held at South Korea.

 

Rabia Zahoor daughter of Zahoor Ahmad Kawoosa hails from Model Town in Sopore town. She is the 9th standard student at Shah Rasool Memorial Welkin School. Rabia Zahoor bagged silver medal for the State in the International Thang-Ta Championship 2017 which was organised by Korea Thang-Ta federation under the aegis of World Thang-Ta Federation and world Martial arts union.

10 countries which included Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Veitnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia and host Korea took part in this mega event. In this Championship, 20 girls from India participated including 3 Kashmiri girls. Indian players won five medals.

 

“We are very proud of our student who has won the international championship. We hope that this achievement can be passed on to other students as well,” said Chairperson SRM Welkin, Baseema Anayat.

 

Ayjaz Ahmed Bhat, Assistant Secretary Thang Ta Federation of India who accompanied the Indian squad as team manager told The Varmul Post From South Korea that participants from state of J&K performed well but they need facilities and proper training to compete and win.

 

“They need regular practice and indoor stadium facilities. If they practice regularly they can bring more laurels to the state and country,” Ayjaz said.

 

In the overall championship,Uzbekistan were the overall champions, Philpinnes were the runners up and India on the second runners by winning of 3 Gold , 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Sairah Zahoor from srinagar won Gold, Rabia Zahoor from sopore won silver & Tamajul Saif Pulwama won bronze. Sairah Zahoor will play in the World Thang-Ta championship next year.
